Despite the proliferation of mobile devices in the office and classroom, the whiteboard still sees a lot of use during meetings and brainstorming sessions. There’s something irreplaceable about it – and with Equil’s upcoming Smartmarker, you’ll be able to save and share all that whiteboard work long after it’s been erased.
The Smartmarker appears to work with two different devices. On attaches to your whiteboard (or glass, or whatever you’re doodling on) and tracks the surface. The other is a pen-like capsule device where you insert a traditional whiteboard marker and draw. Working together, the two can track exactly what you are drawing on the board.
Combined with an app, you can see all the drawing information from your Smartmarker session, save it, and share it with other participants or use it as a reminder of all the brilliant drawings. It’s especially handy for those who could not be present during the drawing itself, and the software works with iCloud, Dropbox, and Evernote, so you probably don’t have to adopt much new technology. Remote viewers can watch a digital version of the chalkboard in real time and zoom in if necessary.
But wait, you may be thinking – whiteboard work tends to be kind of a mess. There’s lots of doodlings that don’t make sense, writing that’s pretty illegible in hindsight, and cramped lists that don’t pair well without context. That tends to make sharing a little useless, right? Well, Equil has thought of this, too, and includes an editing function for the whiteboard working, allowing for further drawing, explanations, color-coding and clarifying as necessary.
If you are interested in the Smartmarker, you’ll have to wait a bit. The marker is due out in 2015, and you can sign up to receive updates.
