If you consume craft beer in any quantity, you’re probably familiar with Untappd, the social network built around drinking beer. Untappd is useful for tracking the craft beers you’ve quaffed and sharing badges with your friends, not to mention annoying your friends who aren’t on Untappd with the badges you earn. But the app is improving in more ways than just finally giving you better photo filters; it’s becoming a drinker’s best friend.
Untappd Potential
First of all, Untappd is overhauling its notorious spotty search feature. Until now, the app has only had text search. Admittedly, it’s pretty good text search; I’ve punched in obscure beers and gotten the right result almost every time. But now you can use the camera function, to this point largely to earn badges, to scan barcodes and get the exact beer you’re drinking. True, this won’t help the draft beer drinker that much, but it will speed up the process of finding the brews you’re drinking if you’re drinking out of a can or bottle.
Another function is quite literally a life-saver; you can hail an Uber from inside the app. That’s smart placement not least because it’s more likely people who’ve had one beer too many will be inside Untappd than calling for a ride, alas. Now people have even less of an excuse to drive drunk, and will get home at least somewhat safer.

Untappd is still a cult app in some ways, largely limited to beer drinkers talking to each other about beer and little else. And there are still changes it could make, especially in the way photos are taken, which could be smoother. But the app is changing, substantially, and that’s a good thing to see as it becomes more useful
